Due to the flat purchase and renovation it's been almost a year since I was last out kayaking on a river (I didn't think it was that long, but the blog doesn't lie!), but yesterday I got myself on one of the club freshers trips. There are a few standard beginners rivers and for this trip we headed to my first river - the Lower Orchy. It seems we weren't the only group to think this as there were about 40 people from Edinburgh's club too.
It was good to be back out on a river with the knowledge that I shouldn't be able to get myself into trouble. I was able to get a good amount of practice ferrying across the river and breaking in and out of eddies, which were things that I needed to work on. All our freshers got on pretty well despite a few swims, although unfortunately early on one of the news paddlers dislocated their shoulder. They also got to experience generally standard of having to change out of their kit in the pouring rain. Everyone seemed to enjoy themselves and I had a lot of fun.
I'm definitely going to try and get out on far more trips this year than the last.
